I watched the first episode of the PBM training course and was particularly interested in how the discrete method differs from the other methods covered. Can you point out the main advantages and limitations of using the discrete method compared with the others?
MR CFD Support –
The main advantage of the Discrete Method in PBM is its ability to provide a detailed description of particle size distribution which can capture the dynamics of particle systems very precisely. However, it can be computationally intensive due to the need to solve a large number of transport equations, especially when dealing with a wide range of particle sizes. Other methods like the Quadrature Moment Method (DQMOM), reduce computational effort by focusing on moments of the distribution but may not capture details as precisely as the discrete method.

Austin Stanton –
This training sessions sounds intriguing—how does the Quadrature moment method differ from the Standard moment method in the PBM settings?
MR CFD Support –
The Quadrature moment method, often referred to as DQMOM, approximates the number density function using a set of nodes and weights. In contrast, the Standard moment method is focused on solving equations for the moments of the number density function without assuming a specific distribution shape. These two methods differ in their computational efficiency and the type of problems they are suited for, with DQMOM offering more accurate representation for complex distributions at the cost of higher computational effort.
